Secretary Rumsfeld stepping down

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stepped down. This comes one day after elections which clearly showed opposition to another Republican controlled House (and possibly Senate) and opposition to the current policy in Iraq.

Robert Gates, a former CIA directory and close friend of the Bush family, will take his place if he is confirmed by the Senate. Gates joined the CIA in 1966 and has served in the intelligence community under six presidents.
